Talon Metals Nickel Mine Advances EIS Scoping Meta

  • Talon Metals nickel mine advances into EIS scoping in Minnesota
  • Public comment period expected on Scoping EAW and Draft Decision Document
  • Feasibility study for Tamarack targeted for second half of 2026
  • Eagle Mine acquisition gives Talon an operating US nickel platform
  • Rio Tinto joint venture and DOE, DOW funding back the project

The Talon Metals nickel mine project in central Minnesota has moved a step closer to formal environmental review. Talon Metals Corp (TSX: TLO / OTC: TLOFF) confirmed on July 9 that its Tamarack Nickel-Copper-Cobalt Project remains on track through the scoping phase of Minnesota’s Environmental Impact Statement process, with a public comment period on the Scoping Environmental Assessment Worksheet and Draft Scoping Decision Document anticipated in the coming weeks.

Why the Tamarack milestone matters

Tamarack is one of the few advanced-stage nickel-copper-cobalt projects in the continental United States, and it sits alongside a small group of proposed US critical minerals projects competing to reduce reliance on imported battery-grade nickel. Talon says several years of baseline environmental work and engagement with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, other agencies, and Tribal governments have helped narrow the scope of issues heading into formal EIS preparation.

CEO Darby Stacey said the company has kept the scoping milestone “on track and on schedule,” calling it the critical path to first ore at Tamarack. Vice President of Projects and Environmental Rob Beranek added that the upfront work has “helped create a stronger project with several potential environmental impacts eliminated.”

Eagle Mine gives Talon an operating US platform

The Tamarack update follows Talon’s acquisition of the producing Eagle nickel mine and Humboldt Mill in Michigan from Lundin Mining in January 2026, a deal that made Lundin a 19.9% Talon shareholder. Eagle is currently the only primary nickel mine operating in the United States, and its cash flow is intended to help fund exploration and permitting at Tamarack while providing an additional processing option alongside the planned Beulah Minerals Processing Facility in North Dakota.

Talon has also resumed exploration drilling in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, testing the Roland and Boulderdash targets across a land package of more than 400,000 acres near Eagle Mine, as it looks to extend mine life beyond Tamarack alone.

Financing, ownership and the road to feasibility

Talon holds 51% of Tamarack in joint venture with Rio Tinto and has an earn-in right to reach 60% ownership, with the deadline for that requirement extended to March 2027 to keep the feasibility study timeline aligned with the environmental review. That feasibility study is expected in the second half of 2026. The project has previously drawn US$114.8 million from the Department of Energy for the Beulah processing facility and a further US$20.6 million from the Department of War for exploration, funding that sits in the same federal push toward domestic supply seen in cases like MP Materials’ Department of Defense deal.

Tamarack’s output is intended to feed the domestic battery supply chain, and Talon has previously held a nickel supply agreement with Tesla. Nickel prices remain a key variable for the project’s economics; current benchmark pricing is tracked on CMN’s nickel price page.

What to watch next

Talon says further detail on the Tamarack environmental review timeline is expected shortly, tied to the next formal step in the DNR-led scoping process. The scoping outcome will set the issues, alternatives, and mitigation measures the full EIS must address, a process that has already stretched over several years and remains the key permitting hurdle standing between Tamarack and construction.

What is the Talon Metals nickel mine?

It is the Tamarack Nickel-Copper-Cobalt Project, an underground mine proposed near Tamarack, Minnesota, developed by Talon Metals Corp in joint venture with Rio Tinto.

What stage is the Tamarack project’s environmental review at

The project is in the scoping phase of Minnesota’s Environmental Impact Statement process, ahead of a public comment period on the scoping documents.

Who owns the Tamarack nickel project?

Talon Metals holds 51% with an earn-in right to reach 60%, in joint venture with Rio Tinto, which holds the remainder.

Does Talon Metals operate any nickel mines already?

Yes. Talon owns and operates the Eagle Mine and Humboldt Mill in Michigan, acquired from Lundin Mining, which is currently the only primary nickel mine operating in the United States.

What would Tamarack’s nickel be used for?

Talon has positioned the project to supply the domestic battery and EV supply chain, with ore processed offsite in Michigan and North Dakota.

What government support has the project received?

Tamarack-linked infrastructure has drawn a Department of Energy grant for the Beulah Minerals Processing Facility and a Department of War grant supporting exploration in Minnesota and Michigan.
