Niobium also naturally forms a thin, stable oxide layer on its surface, which gives it strong resistance to acids and weathering without any additional coating.

The property that sets niobium apart from most other refractory metals is superconductivity. Below roughly 9.2 Kelvin, niobium loses all electrical resistance, giving it the highest critical temperature of any elemental superconductor. This makes niobium-titanium and niobium-tin alloys the standard wire material for the superconducting magnets used in MRI scanners and particle accelerators, including the Large Hadron Collider.

What Is Niobium Used For?

The second major use is aerospace superalloys. Blended with nickel, cobalt, and iron, niobium forms alloys such as Inconel 718 that hold their strength at the extreme temperatures found inside jet engines, gas turbines, and rocket nozzles. Niobium-based superalloys also feature in the propulsion systems of hypersonic missile programmes, giving the metal a direct defence-sector application beyond civil aerospace.

Beyond steel and superalloys, niobium is used in superconducting MRI magnets, as a biocompatible material for pacemakers and surgical implants, and in hypoallergenic jewellery, where anodization produces a range of vivid colours on the metal’s surface without dyes or paints.

Where Is Niobium Produced?

Niobium is never found as a free metal in nature. It is extracted from ore bodies, primarily pyrochlore and columbite, that are typically associated with carbonatite intrusions. Production is among the most geographically concentrated of any critical mineral: Brazil accounted for roughly 93% of global mine output in 2025, with the remainder coming almost entirely from Canada.

Brazil’s dominance rests on two carbonatite-hosted deposits in Minas Gerais and Goiás, while Canada’s Niobec mine in Quebec supplies most of the rest of the world’s material. The United States has no active niobium mine and imports 100% of its supply, mostly as ferroniobium from Brazil and Canada. A project in development in Nebraska aims to become the first US niobium mine and processing facility, and in 2025 the US Department of War awarded the developer funding to support a domestic supply chain, though the mine is not yet in production. With one country supplying more than 90% of global output and a second supplying most of the remainder, any disruption to Brazilian production or export policy has an outsized effect on global availability, and there is no meaningful alternative producer able to absorb a shortfall quickly. This concentration is a large part of why niobium appears on critical minerals lists in the US, UK, EU, and Australia despite reserves being more than adequate to meet long-term demand.

For steelmakers, there are partial substitutes available, including molybdenum and vanadium in high-strength low-alloy steel, though each comes with a performance or cost trade-off.
