What is tantalum? It is a dense, corrosion-resistant transition metal (chemical symbol Ta) that has become indispensable to modern electronics and defence manufacturing, prized for a combination of properties few substitutes can match.

What Is Tantalum? Properties and Characteristics

Tantalum was first isolated in 1802 by the Swedish chemist Anders Gustaf Ekeberg, who named it after Tantalus from Greek mythology because the metal resisted dissolving in acid no matter how it was treated. That resistance remains its defining trait: below roughly 150°C, tantalum is almost completely immune to attack by most acids, including aqua regia, a property often compared to glass.

It also has one of the highest melting points of any metal, at 3,017°C, exceeded only by tungsten, rhenium and osmium. Combined with high density (16.68 g/cm3) and strong ductility, tantalum can be drawn into fine wire or rolled into thin sheets despite its hardness. It is biocompatible too, which explains its use well outside electronics.

What Is Tantalum Used For?

The largest commercial use is in tantalum capacitors, where tantalum powder is pressed into a pellet and coated with a thin oxide layer that acts as the dielectric. Because that layer can be extremely thin relative to alternatives like aluminium electrolytic capacitors, tantalum capacitors pack high capacitance into a small footprint, which is why they turn up in smartphones, laptops, automotive electronics and, increasingly, electric vehicle power management and ADAS systems.

Beyond capacitors, tantalum is alloyed with nickel and cobalt to produce superalloys used in jet engine turbine blades and missile components, where it holds its strength at extreme temperatures. Its chemical inertness makes it a standard lining material for reaction vessels and heat exchangers handling aggressive acids. In medicine, tantalum’s biocompatibility supports its use in bone screws, skull plates and porous coatings for joint implants, where it bonds directly with living bone tissue.

Where Is Tantalum Produced?

Tantalum almost never occurs as a free metal. It is extracted from tantalite ore, commonly known by its industrial name coltan when combined with niobium-bearing columbite, and production has shifted heavily toward Central Africa since the mid-2000s. The Democratic Republic of Congo now accounts for close to 40% of global mine output, with Rwanda contributing a further 18% or so, largely through artisanal and small-scale mining. Brazil and Australia remain established, industrially mined sources, while China holds substantial reserves in Jiangxi province.

The United States has not mined tantalum domestically since 1959. According to USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, US manufacturers rely entirely on imported ore, concentrate and scrap to supply domestic capacitor, alloy and compound production, with 2025 consumption valued at roughly $190 million on an import basis.

Tantalum Supply Chain Risks

Tantalum’s supply chain carries more geopolitical and reputational risk than most technology metals its size. It is one of the four minerals, alongside tin, tungsten and gold, designated “conflict minerals” under Section 1502 of the US Dodd-Frank Act, reflecting documented links between coltan mining revenue and armed conflict in eastern DRC. A second risk is processing concentration. Even where ore is mined outside China, a significant share of tantalum concentrate is refined into oxide and metal powder through Chinese facilities, giving Beijing influence over midstream supply regardless of where the raw ore originates. On the demand side, some substitution exists: niobium and aluminium can replace tantalum in certain capacitor and corrosion-resistant applications, and tungsten or niobium can substitute in some carbide uses, but with a performance or cost penalty that limits how far substitution can go in high-reliability defence and aerospace applications.
